NaNoWriMo Week 2: Murders, Impending Death, and Vanilla Pudding

Good afternoon, Cyberspace! Sorry for the late post this week, but yowzers. NaNoWriMo week one has been a roller coaster of emotion for me. It’s been phenomenal. Really.

#lies

So NaNoWriMo kicked off last Tuesday, and since then a lot has happened. For starters…

I killed three men. On day one.

Well, technically I only gently murdered them. And they are characters, not men. But they are dead. And I did it.

Sort of.

Anyway, the scene in which they were killed was–sort of horrifically–one of my favorites to write all week. Does that make me a psychotic murderer? A freak? A mad hatter? Possibly all of the above? Either way, it was tons of fun to write. I loved every second of it.

And that sounds totally creepy. Another thing to keep in mind is that this murderfest all happened in the very first chapter.

(That’s right. Three men get murdered in chapter one. #wrong)

But it’s okay, because I swear this book isn’t full of death and destruction. It’s full of love and friendship, with really inspirational themes.

Yeah, no one believes that.

Anyway, week one was also a week of discovery for me. A few things happened this week that I had NOT planned at ALL, yet somehow just seem to make sense for the characters and the story.

The first happened to my wonderful character Adaline, who I’ve done an interview on, if you’d like to check that out. Basically, it has come to my knowledge that this strange little bean absolutely loves pudding. And not just any pudding, either.

Vanilla pudding.

Ew. I mean, if she wanted pudding, couldn’t it at least be chocolate? But no. She likes vanilla pudding, and now I’ve got random scenes in my head in which she’s scrounging around in fridges looking for the stuff.

this book is going to be an absolute trainwreck soon please help me

My second wait–what? moment happened with my second female character, who has still not been revealed and probably never will be mwahahahahaha shall still remained cloaked in mystery for today.

Basically, my character now has a disease. And not just a normal disease, like a common cold or something, no. She is now dying. Literally. She’s dying.

And I honestly don’t know how I’m going to fix it.

When I was initially plotting out my book, I thought that all the main characters would survive. Now my book’s just like, “Oop, well, maybe not!”

Joy.

Anway! Enough about my Week 1 recap. It’s time for some

Week 2 Inspiration

Week two is upon us, Cyberspace. Honestly, I think it was around this time last year that I quit.

Yep. Me. A quitter.

I know, I know. It’s so hard to believe, right? But it’s true. I had decided that I just couldn’t take the pressure. I didn’t have the time to write 50,000 words in a month. It was too much to chew, and I just couldn’t swallow it.

So I quit.

And I can honestly tell you right here and now that I have completely regretted that decision a thousand times over since then.

Here’s the thing: You’re probably getting to the point in your story where you’re nearing the slump point. It’s not the beginning, it’s not the final stretch where all your hopes and dreams are right before your eyes, it’s possibly not even the middle–it’s week two. And it is ugly.

If you’re like me, you’re probably right around the point where you have to physically force yourself to sit down and write everyday. The joys of Week 1 have vanished, leaving you with this weird aftertaste of excitement and a passion for procrastination. The wonders of writing you experienced in Week 1 are now just part of the daily routine. You’re tired. You hate your story. Your characters are throwing onions at each other. Your inner editor is whispering lovely things in your ear, such as

“This is lame.”

“Your characters are lame.”

“You’re lame.”

and you just want to quit.

But you can’t.

You have to push through this. You have to duct tape your inner editor’s mouth closed and keep writing. Because the truth is, your story is awesome, your characters are awesome, and you–you wonderful bean, you–are awesome. Even if you’re super behind on your word count, do NOT give up. NaNoWriMo is tough, and it is so super easy to quit. I know. I’ve been there. But pushing through to the end is SO much more rewarding.

And admit it. You secretly love the pain and insanity that comes along with NaNo. You’re a writer. You don’t need a brain.

Week 3 is just around the corner, and after that, Week 4. So keep going, keep writing, and eventually, you will cross that finish line with your head held high.

I believe in you.

–Kenzie

P.S. OH MY WORD THIS POST WAS SO INSPIRATIONAL. How disgusting.

  1. Ohmygosh, ohmygosh, ohmygosh!!!! THIS POST.

    I must squeal!!!

Firstly – DEATH. Yasssss!!!! Let it begin, let it begin!!!!

Actually my first killing (that I actually “pictured”??? Like you “see” it/I don’t go elsewhere and just say, “oh hey, and, um, she’s dead now…” This has not been a helpful explanation…) was actually WEIRDLY EMOTIONAL for me?????

Whaaaaat??? Who am I???? Who is writing this comment???? #notme

    Sooooo… That was weird.

In other news: I have killed about a dozen characters today???? #bestdayofmylife Because I was in DESPAIR last night because MY BOOK WAS DEAD???? So I decided to start killing people ferociously!!! Huzzah!

Also I have fiery meteors (are there other kinds?????) falling from the sky now… #fun

Aaaand I may have switched genres??? And the ending??? And who dies??? (Hint: EVERYONE!!!!)

Basically, I ALWAYS ASSUMED I was a plotter. Apparently I’m not???? Nobody bothered to tell ME!

Also when you said, “I realized I had bit off more than I could chew and I couldn’t swallow” I totally read the next part, “so I spit.” Oops.

I promise this comment will be over soon! I promise. I do.

Baaack to what I was saying: “I’m a writer. I don’t need a brain” = my new mantra.

I loooove Adaline sooooo much!!!!! Also her love of vanilla pudding somehow does not surprise me???? It just seems like something she would like. Also I want to abduct her and put her into MY BOOK????

And lastly (I promise!) WHY ARE THERE EVEN PEOPLE WHO PREFER VANILLA PUDDING TO CHOCOLATE???? WHO EVEN CREATED VANILLA PUDDING???? Whyyyyyyy????

    • Oh my word, I was literally dying the entire time I read your wonderful comment! Haha, this is like the best thing ever, and I don’t even know where to start!

Okay, first off, I TOTALLY need this book in my life! Seriously! Are you looking for beta readers? Because I would beta read this thing like a million times. And ferociously killing people because of a writing slump is the absolute BEST strategy to overcome writer’s block and really kick up the action!! And OH MY GOODNESS FIERY METEORS!!! Seriously, I want this book so bad!! And I love the new ending! Best ending ever!

Hahahahaha! Technically I consider myself to be a bit of both, but I’m sort of possibly freaking out because I’m running out of my half plotted out plot and I need to fix this right now because #fail

Well, I guess technically I did spit, because I quit and didn’t finish? Right?? Maybe??? Lol!

And oh my word, thank you! I love her too, haha! And I’m so glad you think so, too! Vanilla pudding just seems very Adaline-esque! Haha, Adaline is one of my favorites for Ever Lost, so I’m so super happy that you like her!

AND OH MY GOODNESS I DON’T KNOW IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE AT ALL!!!!!!!

      • Awwwww, YOU ARE SO SWEET!!! Um, so, yes, I guess I will be looking for beta readers IF I EVER FINISH THE DARN THANG!!!! #majorfail Aaaalso I don’t know so very much about beta-reading and such AS I, AHEM, MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE ACTUALLY EVER FINISHED ANYTHING?????? (Don’t tell ANYONE!!!!) But if you van tell me how it works, I will let you beta read (also if it doesn’t cost a million dollars. In that case, no, all bets are off, my friend.)

        • Um…. Actually, I have no clue how beta reading works, as I have never
          1. Finished anything larger than a short story before (#quitter)
And 2. Never actually beta read or sent something out to beta readers before….

So…#fail. Lol, well, I’m sure someday we’ll figure this whole author thing out right? Today we can be crazy writers who have no clue what we’re doing, haha!

          • Bahaha!!! Then we are in exactly the same boat!

I’ll make you a deal: you can beta read mine if I can beta read yours!!!!

Also if you ever figure out how to do this writer thing, let me know, okay????

  2. Ugh, I totally know what you mean about things not going according the plan. So, I had this whole beginning planned out for my story, and then… My characters decided to switch it up on me and now I have these threat letters from a dangerous Lord Branthum to deal with. Gosh, I mean, I didn’t need more problems. :P

I love your whole thing about week 2! I think that you read my mind, because that is exactly how I have been feeling. I am about 2,000 words behind, procrastination is calling stronger than ever, and that inner editor keeps on telling me that my story isn’t good enough. I have literally been having to force myself to push on that dreaded word processor and every word is a challenge… I’m gonna do it though! No quitting!

Anyway, I absolutely love this post!! Thanks for the bit of inspiration! I really needed it! :D

  3. Oh no!!! Ugh, it’s so hard to try and swing your whole plot a different way than what was initially planned, right?? But might I say how much I love the name Lord Branthum, and I’m actually very intrigued to learn more about him!! (Can I read your story??? PLEASE????)

Oh my word, I am SO glad that you liked this post! I was actually worried that maybe everyone was still on a Week 1 high, and no one else felt seriously bogged down yet, but I decided to go with what I knew and felt, so YAY!! It worked!!! And I’m SO proud of you for not quitting! You’ve got this! 2000 words may seem like a lot, but if you just break it up into smaller chunks and write a little extra every day, then you’ll be back on top in no time!!

And don’t listen to that inner editor! You’re story is amazing!!

Thank you so much for your comment! I’m so glad you liked this post!!!

Buuuuut…I killed him. Evil, cruel, me.
    Oh well…
YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE HOW MUCH MY CHARACTERS HAVE BETRAYED ME AND COMPLETELY TWISTED MY STORY AROUND UNTIL I CAN’T EVEN RECOGNIZE MY CHERISHED PLOT POINTS!!!!!
Sorry for yelling. It’s been a crazy two weeks… In fact, I think that I’m going a little crazy.

    • Going mentally insane is the best part of NaNo! What are you talking about? *bangs head against the wall to drown out the disembodied voices*
      Lol!!

And ooh… Poor little innocent kid… Oh well! Perhaps his death served some purpose in driving the plot along? Or maybe he just needed to die because HE NO LONGER DESERVED TO LIVE! Mwahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

And my character has not yet succumbed to her death, but it shall happen soon, mwahahaha! Unless, you know, they find the cure. Which is just lame, really.

Aw! Thank you so much! LUV YOU TOO AND YOUR BLOG AS WELL AND I ALSO HAVE THIS WIERD LOVE/HATE RELATIONSHIP WITH NANOWRIMO BECAUSE IT IS WONDERFUL YET SLOWLY KILLING MY SOUL.

      • YAAAAS!!! NaNoWrimo’s tagline should be: “The organization responsible for driving millions of writers insane…”
Well, his death actually is driving my MC forward, so it worked out after all… But I initially killed him because I just didn’t like him and he was annoying XD Ikr, such a good reason…

NO CURE!! DESTROY THE CURE!! Lemme know when the epic death is supposed to happen, and I will watch in breathless anticipation.

        • Agreed! And ooh! That’s good, then! Keep driving that plot forward!

And oh my goodness, haha! I’m not sure how the ending is going to work out quite yet, but she will either be healed or die, and I’m not sure which one I’m leaning towards….

  5. Aww, that was so INSPIRING AND NICE. *sniffles emotionally in the back row* :’) But seriously, this is the best.😂 hehe. And I fully admit to being far too enthusiastic when I kill characters too. Ahem. I’m sure we’re normal. My NaNo novel was supposed to be light and fluffy (okay it was NOT fluffy, but I didn’t murder anyone so that’s pretty light for me) but I did hit a character with a car and perhaps it was a really fun chapter to write. DEFINITELY NORMAL. SAY IT A FEW TIMES SO IT’S TRUE!!
Anyway! I’m a plotter all the way. :’) And I didn’t plan for my book to be so obsessed with brownies. I think it was because I was eating a lot of brownie while writing them???? But literally my book is 7% plot and 93% ode to brownies. I have no regrets.😂

    • Lol, why thank you! I’m so glad that I could be an inspiration, hahahahahahahahaha!!!

Ooh!!! Hitting people with cars sounds like so much fun!!!! (Oh my word that sounded psycho… This is why I should not be allowed on the roads…or out of my house…)

And brooooooowwwwnnnniiiieeees!!!! Oh my word, I would love to hear an ode to a brownie!! That should be a writing prompt, haha!

You’re book sounds SO interesting… I really wanna read it, haha!

  6. “It’s not the beginning, it’s not the final stretch” I wish it wasn’t still the beginning, but I spent so much time detailing totally irrelevant things that I’m still in the introduction stages, even though I’m on par with the word count. ;_; WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Oh no!!! Haha, but I can totally understand that! Sometimes it’s difficult to kickstart into the story. But hey! Maybe what you’re writing will help you understand the setting and all-around story once you plunge into the second draft??
