Beautiful People ~ March Edition: Introducing The Girl With No Name

Good afternoon, Cyberspace! Thankfully, I have finally managed to return to my normal posting schedule today, so let us celebrate for a moment by stuffing our faces full of cookies and crying enthusiastic tears of joy.

Now, in the past I have participated in the Beautiful Books linkup hosted by Cait and Sky, which, basically, is this wonderful linkup designed to help writers get to know their NaNoWriMo stories (or just writing projects in general); however, now that NaNoWriMo is over, it seems to have reverted back into its natural state of Beautiful People, which I believe focuses more on the individual characters, rather than the whole book, in all of its glorious, plot-hole-filled entirety.

I could, however, be extremely wrong.

There actually was a Beautiful People back in February that focused on story couples, but as I completely and blatantly refuse to write romances, I decided not to do that one. Because, let’s be honest, it probably would have been filled to the brim with things like “Well, since I don’t write romances, I’m about to brutally murder this character because they’re starting to like someone.”

And that would not have made for a very interesting post.

But anyway, today I’m diving in and answering ALL of the intriguing questions, while simultaneously introducing you to a character whom I have tried exceedingly hard not to mention.

The girl without a name.

But first, take a moment to admire this beautiful button, that, when clicked on, shall hopefully take you back to the original Beautiful People post.

(I am actually awful at making picture links work, though, so it’ll probably just catapult you into a dark and empty void in the center of cyberspace. Who knows.)

PAPERFURY

Anyway! Before we begin, I have a confession to make…

The title is a lie.

The girl actually does have a name. I have this problem where if a character has not been equipped with a name, I physically am unable to write them; however, this particular character’s name gives away a LOT more plot details than I am comfortable sharing at this particular point in the time-sphere, so for right now, she has no name.

At least to you.

(#writerprivileges)

But, for the sake of not having to write THE GIRL WITH NO NAME every single time I answer a question, let us give her a nickname.

We’ll call her Bella.

Okay? Okay.

Now, onward with the questions!

What’s their favourite book/movie/play/etc.?

Uhhhh…. Okay, so basically “Bella” is sort of a “recluse”, so she hasn’t actually ever seen any movies or plays? As far as books go, I don’t know as if she’s read any of those either.

However, there is a story that she was told once when she was younger, and to this day it holds a very special place in her heart. It was a fairytale-ish story about stars and love and finding your way back home, which was actually very comforting to her, as she was severely lost at the time.

Still is, actually.

(I’m starting to realize that sharing this character’s life is going to be a lot more tricky than I realized… [#plotproblems])

Is there anything they regret doing?

Hmm… Complicated question, and one I’m not exactly sure I have an answer to. She does regret quite a bit, I think, but that is more from her past, and that is a part of her life I haven’t fully fleshed out yet.

If they were sick or wounded, who would take care of them and how?

Peter. Definitely Peter.

Peter would be the one to take care of her and make sure she was going to be okay. In fact, in book two, there’s going to be some major ‘health’ issues she faces, so it will be interesting to see how he ends up handling things.

Will he save her? Will she die?? What is she suffering from???

Find out in the next installment of everlost!!!!

MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Is there an object they can’t bear to part with and why?

Why, yes. Yes, there is. There’s two, actually, but I’ll just go with the one that’s less of a spoiler.

For her eighteenth birthday, Peter gives “Bella” a special necklace that he made for her himself. It’s extremely precious to her, and losing it would be like losing a part of him. That, of course, would break her heart, so she’s very protective of it.

Have I mentioned that I don’t write romances? Because I don’t write romances.

What are 5 ways to win their heart (or friendship)?

Well, Peter fed her chocolate the first time they met, and now they’re the best of friends, so…

But honestly, “Bella” is a rather shy, introverted character, who is frightened easily by new and unfamiliar people. This makes it rather hard for people to get close to her; however, I shall compile a small list of things to win her heart.

  • Be patient with her and show her that you’ll never betray her
  • Calm her down whenever she becomes frightened
  • Feed her chocolate
  • Don’t force her to speak about her past if she doesn’t want to
  • Be a nineteen-year-old science genius named Peter

Describe a typical outfit for them from top to bottom.

Aha! A question that I don’t have to carefully skirt around because of spoilers!

Basically, it’s the Locket standard uniform: a thin white button-up, short-sleeved shirt and long white pants. There are supposed to be some slippers that go along with it, but she prefers to go barefoot.

What’s their favorite type of weather?

Um…well…she doesn’t really have one. Let’s just say that she and weather haven’t exactly met in a while.

What’s the worst fight they’ve ever been in?

Again, I think the worst fight she’s ever been in happened when she was younger. I haven’t really figured out all the details of her past, though, so I can’t say for sure what the fight was about, or what exactly happened.

What names or nicknames have they been called throughout their life?

Excluding the nickname of “Bella“, she’s been called “Wall girl”, “Ding-Dong”, “Pixie”, and possibly a couple others.

Thao likes to give people nicknames…

What makes their heart feel alive?

Ooh! I absolutely love this question…

I think I’m going to have to go with being around Peter. She’s extremely reclusive, and Peter is the only person she can really be herself around. He makes her feel less…trapped. Less like she’s in a cage, and more like she’s free.

(Still don’t write romances.)

Well, that’s it for the questions! I do have a couple updates to mention real quick before signing off, so just stick with me for a moment.

Update 1: I am having a ton of trouble getting my Camp NaNoWriMo Camper search button thing-a-ma-jig to work, so if those of you who are interested in being in the cabin could just pop on over and buddy me here, then I can get started inviting y’all to the cabin!! Eek!  (Just make sure you’ve got a project created on the site, or I won’t be able to add you yet.)

EDIT: So apparently you can’t buddy people on the Camp NaNo website??? I guess you can just tell me your Camp NaNo username in the comments below and I’ll see if I can get my search thing working… (I’m too lazy to delete the link above this edit, so yeah. If you wanna see what I’m going to be working on, here’s your shot!)

Also, what do you guys think of our little writing group having a cool name or something to go along with it? Like ‘The Writing Hobos’ or something. (But cooler than that, obviously) Anyone got any suggestions? I mean, we don’t even have to be called anything if you guys don’t want to. It was just a spontaneous thought that burst into my head.

(I am way too excited for Camp NaNoWriMo…)

Update 2: I meant to mention this like a million years ago, but the polls are finally in! Yay! I’ve collected the information, and I believe I know what our very first arts and crafts thing is going to be. This will be the moment when we realize whether or not the Arts and Crafts Center is going to be a hit, or going to flop majorly like a burnt old pancake. (I’m betting on the latter.) I hope you guys won’t be too disappointed if the Arts and Crafts Center never really leaves the ground. I’m starting to realize just how crafty I’m really not.

Another huge thank you to Cait and Sky for hosting Beautiful People! The questions are simply amazing, and I really enjoy participating!!

And that is it for this smudge! What do you guys think of “Bella”? Are you extremely confused by all of the skirting around major plot spoilers I had to do? Do you wish I would have gone more in-depth on her past? (I know I do.) How are all of your writing projects going? Do you have any characters that are acting like a cardboard box?  Up until yesterday, “Bella” was acting like a cardboard box. Then I listened to ‘We Are Young’ by F.U.N. for two hours straight while writing, and what do you know? She’s one of my favorite characters now. Too bad she won’t make another appearance in the story until the very last chapter now. Poor “Bella”.

  1. I am very curious about her special magic necklace, I bet it’s pretty and shiny! Some characters just don’t want to give their backstory except through the novel itself. Mystery is important…
More stories usually involve romance and magical world wars. But I do have some characters who are thoroughly non-romantic. I was very surprised when I suddenly found out that a character liked one who was utterly oblivious to such feelings! But it will never be…

I’m very excited for Camp Nanowrimo, but I don’t know what to write so far. The Deathmatch is ongoing and I must determine the winner soon!

    • Oh yes, it is very pretty and shiny! I remember exactly where I was when it hit me to include the necklace in the story. It just tied in so well with the story that I couldn’t ignore it.

Yeah, “Bella” is a pretty tough character to get to know, so it only makes sense that I couldn’t really crack her until writing quite a few scenes from her perspective. Sadly, I really didn’t like her all that much until the scene where I had to remove her from the equation for a while, so that was a little disappointing, lol!

Ooh!! That situation sounds hilarious, lol! And yeah, I personally don’t write romance (or so I say) but I do like reading it sometimes, depending on if, along with the romance, there is action and adventure. I’m not a romance genre type of girl, I guess, haha!

Eek!!! Me too!!! As soon as you create a project on the Camp NaNo site, make sure buddy me or send me your User so I can add you to the cabin!! It’s gonna be FANTASTIC!

  3. I’m intrigued by the mention of the ‘Locket standard uniform’; – is she in some kind of school or facility? Also, I think you’re definitely in denial about writing romance… ;)

    • Alas! That is information THAT SHALL REMAIN A SECRET!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHA! Actually, with a bit of searching I’m sure I’ve already mentioned it somewhere (stupid past self) but right now I’m trying to keep most of the main plot points under wraps, just until I actually finish the first draft, lol!

You know, everyone keeps telling me that, but I am stubbornly refusing to listen, lol! Nope! No romances here!

Thank you for commenting!!! I’m actually really happy you caught the standard uniform thing! Clever eye!!! :D

Aww, thank you! And I can’t wait to have this story done so you CAN beta read it! It is taking FOREVER! But I guess I’d rather take my time with it and have a good story than slap it together???

No… No, I would rather slap it together at this point… Definitely…

          • Ha! Well, I hope she survives long enough for me to meet her, anyway. Though I don’t exactly have the best track record for not murdering off characters at the least provocation, do I? :)

            • Oh, don’t worry, you’ll get to meet her! After a little tweaking in her earlier chapters, I’m thinking she’s going to be one of my favorite characters. I’m not sure yet, though…

Ooh!!! Probably not, haha! MAKE SURE TO LET SOME OF THEM LIVE!!!!

  5. The Nameless sounds like a super cool character! But, honestly, what I’m the most curious about is why you don’t write romances? Do they just not interest you? Are you like me and believe that books need more platonic relationships? Do you feel like you don’t write good ones?

Thanks for stopping by Writing on a Vintage Typewriter!

    Liked by 1 person

    • Well, there are quite a few reasons why I try to refrain from writing them. The main reasons being that 1) I do actually believe that books need more platonic relationships, 2) I can’t write a romance to save my life??? Granted, I’ve never really tried, but even if I did, it’s like I’ve just thrown a hunk of cheddar cheese right jam center in the middle of my manuscript. 3) Quite frankly, the thought of me writing about two characters falling in love horrifies me to no end. I have no clue why…

I do, however, like READING about romances in books, so I have no idea why I’m so against writing them? Although everlost is going against every single writing rule I’ve ever created (which is a good thing, I suppose), so who knows what’s going to happen with this story, haha!

Thank you so much for commenting!! Your blog is absolutely amazing!!

      • I wondered if it was because you identified as aromantic, too. Like, I feel extremely weird writing sexual attraction/relationships in my novels because the thought of it is so weird. So when I write romances, they’re that…romances. Romantic attraction.
And writing rules are there to be broken. BREAK AWAY.

        Liked by 1 person

        • Yesss! Break ALL THE RULES!!!

It really is weird to write romance, and while I feel like a couple of my characters could like each other, I’m sort of keeping it vague because 1) I LIKE TORTURING MY READERS MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!! and 2) I would never write anything more than characters holding hands basically, because I don’t necessarily like EXTREME romance, lol!
