The NaNoWriMo Dare Squad: Meet The Squad!

It is time, Cyberspace.

Today is Halloween.

For normal people, this is the day of candy. The day of admiring the mutilated flesh of once joyful pumpkins rotting and molding out on our front stoops. Of freely giving away our carefully stashed candy to tiny little peasants who come up to our doors like chocolate-obsessed lunatics dressed in bizarre clothing.

But today, as you begin to stuff your chipmunk face full of all the chocolate and candy and popcorn balls (BLECH) that you refuse to give away to the three hundred Captain America’s walking down your leaf-strewn street, you might find your slightly warped brain meats preoccupied by something far less appetizing than how many marshmallows you can fit into your cheeks without choking.

Something far more frightening.

Something disastrous.

. . .

Your impending doom.

Or, as I like to call it, NaNoWriMo.

That’s right, folks. NaNoWriMo is tomorrow.

TOMORROW.

All of that long, tiring, non-existent preparation we’ve undergone in the last month has built up to this very moment. For when the porch lights flicker off and the stampeding tread of child-like feet has disappeared off the pavement — when the world goes quiet and the night turns dead — us writers shall retire into our fluffy pajama’s, power on our busted old laptops, flip open our slightly crinkled and probably-at-one-point-sat-upon notebooks, and. . .wait.

And wait. . .

And wait. . .

And wait. . .

We twiddle our thumbs. We stare at the clock. We do weird finger stretches and self-inflicted thumb-wrestling matches in the hopes that perhaps it will miraculously boost our word count once the clock finally — FINALLY — strikes twelve.

And suddenly, when our novel-inspired playlist loops back around for the third time that night and we’re about to doze off into the graceful clutches of slumber. . .midnight comes.

Ah yes. Midnight. For some Wrimo’s, it’s not natural to stay up until the dead of night in order to write three sentences and then promptly fall asleep like the logs that we are. For some, it is much easier to get a good night’s sleep and hit the ground running on November first, their brain freshly rested and ready to pound out 50,000 words in 30 days.

But for me, staying up on November’s-Eve is tradition.

I love the thrill coursing through my veins in those final moments spent in nervous anticipation.

I love the subtle nip of the very beginnings of November air.

I love the eerie howls penetrating through my window panes as the werewolves take their final flight before morning.

I love the mutilated screams as human flesh is devoured by aforementioned werewolves.

I love wiggling my toes beneath the blankets because it makes me feel cute and innocent.

I just love it all.

November is one of my absolute favorite months of the year, and this is majorly because of the beautiful thing that is NaNoWriMo. The sense of community and closeness in an occupation that is usually so lonely and distanced from all other forms of humanity is overwhelming. And this year, through the spontaneous creation known as The NaNoWriMo Dare Squad, I’m hoping to better connect with you — my fellow NaNoers (that is obviously a word, what are you talking about) and bloggers.

And what better way to do that than by making this Dare Squad official?

See, I’ve decided to take a bit of a blogging hiatus in November. In an effort to try and escape the throes of death that await me if I fail in completing my goal of finishing the second draft of everlost, I have decided that writing a blog post every week could quite possibly be the worst idea that I have ever had.

However, I still want to keep track of how you’re all doing with your projects over the course of November. I want to hear about your woes, your victories, your achievements, your complications. I want to see the fear coursing through your veins when you realize that you might actually have to roll the dice and meet your untimely demise want to be there for you whenever you need a pep-talk, or just a simple word of encouragement.

Though writing is most definitely a solitary act, NaNoWriMo was never meant to be done alone. It is won as a team, by lifting each other up and cheering each other on.

So instead of doing a weekly post that has absolutely nothing to do with the sheer torment we’re all going through during the month of November, I’m going to be posting a weekly Sign-In — a little place where the Squad can come together and talk about how we’re doing, go over our story’s sufferings and accomplishments, and discuss ways to defeat the dastardly writer’s block.

because there is going to be a lot of writer’s block.

And if you don’t happen to be part of the Squad, but you’d still like to pop in and offer up a pep-talk or your secret stash of cookies, then you are absolutely welcome to come on in and sob salty ooze talk stories with us!

Because November is the month of story creation, and whether you’re participating in NaNoWriMo or not, stories are a constant part of every writer’s life.

So let’s get this ball rolling, shall we? November is fast approaching, and that can only mean one thing. . .

The Dare Squad must assemble.

And so, without further ado, allow me to introduce each and every one of you to–

– The 2017 NaNoWriMo Dare Squad –

The Participants List (no dares)
I feel like we need superhero costumes, or something. One of you get on that.

As you can see, there are 11 of us.

11 Members.

11 Dares.

11 Ways to die.

#ournewslogan

Another thing you might have noticed is that, while I was typing everything up onto the graph, I tried to keep all of your words as true and exact to what you posted as I possibly could. This is because it is my firm belief that a writer’s words are more than just symbols on a page. When a writer writes, their words become a part of them, a unique piece to the puzzle that is their existence, and absolutely no one should try and take that away from them.

So if there is anything on the board that you feel isn’t quite right, please feel free to let me know, and I will make sure to change it as soon as I possibly can.

And if you just so happen to be a little late to the party and haven’t submitted your Dare Squad form yet, please do not be afraid to get in touch with me and sign up! The beautiful thing about that lovely graph up there is that it can be easily changed.

So if you’re interested in signing up, or just want to learn more about the Dare Squad in general, I would recommend checking out this smudge right here, or messaging me personally over in the Suggestion Desk!

(NOTE: The official end-date for sign up is November 1st [because I’d like to focus more on my writing than editing fiddly graphs] but if you fling some cookies in my general direction, I can definitely make some exceptions for late Squad members! [or you could just give me cookies because you’re a nice person. whatever floats your boat, I suppose.])

November begins in less than 24 hours, my friends. In less than 24 hours, we shall all be hastily typing away on our bruised keyboards, or angrily scratching deep trenches into the possibly bloodied pages of our shredded notebooks.

November is nearly upon us, Cyberspace, and it is time.

It is time to assemble.

talk to me, peasants!

What’s up, my fellow Squadians? (is this a word? I think this is a word.) November is nearly here, and it is finally time to assemble and meet our fellow Squad members! And what better way to get the party started than by talking about our absolute favorite NaNoWriMo traditions?

Are there any special routines you go through to get your mind and fingers ready for the NaNoWriMo season? Do you love staying up until the stroke of midnight to get the first words of your novel penned down before crashing into your pillows like the sleep-deprived soul that you are, or do you prefer to start with a fresh mind and page on the morning of November first? Is your tradition seeing how many pounds of candy you can swallow whole whilst sobbing dramatically into a soiled hanky? Or do you prefer snacking on your favorite cannibalistic fruit chew?

(oh, phooey. it’s Halloween. allow me to be creepy for once in my life, sir. [because I’m not creepy every other day of the year. obviously.])

Whatever your NaNo tradition happens to be, let us talk about ALL OF THE THINGS down in the comments below! And don’t forget to give a shoutout to all your fellow teammates, as well! (unless you are a shy bean who would rather participate in the Dare Squad without the intimidation of trying to talk to other people. [this is perfectly understandable, and you will still get all of the cookies!!]) After all, we’re all in this together, aren’t we?

We are all doomed.

And to those of you not participating in the Dare Squad, what are some of YOUR favorite things about November? Will you be working on any stories throughout the month, or are you taking the month off to focus on your studies? (because let’s face it. school is actually a very wise [AND TRAUMATIC] responsibility to have, and you deserve all of the cookies for that, sir! *flings cookies at your face*) Are you going to enjoy sitting back in your giant swivel chair and laughing hysterically as you watch all of us idiotic NaNoers scramble to reach our goals by the 30th, or are you going to be rooting us on like the kind soul that you aren’t? Whatever it is you’re doing this next month, let us talk about ALL OF IT down in the comments below!

As always, until next time. . .

*flings cookies in the air and disappears*

    EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!!!
It’s almost here! I always stay up for Nano, I usually stop writing at 1am. AAAAAA!!!
This year is going to be bigger and crazier!
*Hyper babbling of incoherence and screeches*

AAAAAAAAAAAAA!! I better make sure my stock of cozy sweaters is ready for this month.

    • *salutes* Good evening, Jethan! How fares thee this glorious Hollow’s Eve?

OH MY WORD, SAAAAAAAAMMMMEEEE!!! I’m planning on staying up at LEAST until 1. Any later depends solely on whether I’m exhausted, or able to keep writing. This is so exhilarating!!!!

I KNOW!! This is like the year of ALL THE BIG AND CRAZY THINGS AND GAH!!! I’m so nervous excited!!!!

Ooh! A stock of cozy sweaters sounds wonderful…. I need… XD

      • I was kept busy until about 11pm so I felt very, very tired and rested in bed until midnight. And then I wrote a bit. And stayed up till nearly 1am procrastinating instead of writing. xD

But the morning was far better!
EEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! Let us toast to another Nano year with mugs of hot chocolate!

        • Hahahaha! That sounds like a lot of fun, though!!! Much better than what I did…

My vigilance began promptly at ten o’clock, in which I then sat up all alone in the darkness, listening to our extremely loud cuckoo clock… I soon got bored with waiting, however, and began working on the chapter I’ve been working on for a million years while waiting for midnight to roll around. (SHHHH, I’m a rebel. XD) And then I wrote straight on through midnight till about 12:29-ish, and then I went to bed… XD So much for pulling an all-nighter. XD

I AM SO GLAD THE MORNING WAS BETTER!!! This NaNo is going to be AMAZING!!!! *clinks mugs*

          • Hehe, yeah waiting two hours for Nano to start is way rougher. xD I just wanted to nap through the start instead. I think it’s the only year I was that laissez-faire about starting Nano.

Ooh, you are a terribly rebellious rebel! (But then again you’ve been revising it all year so…)
If I tried to pull an all-nighter I would have written a terrible intro for my story and felt the whole thing was an utterly mangled mess. And confused my sleepiness for boredom. xD

            Liked by 1 person

            • Ugh!! It was pure at utter horror!!! But we SURVIVED!!!!! …sort of?? Same!!! I can’t remember never NOT wanting to stay up, but I guess I was just super anxious about the whole thing and wanted to sleep through it… XD

I AM THE MOST REBELLIOUS REBEL EVER, MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
I actually…have no clue what I wrote that night???? I think I completely forgot every single word that I ever wrote over the course of the month, actually…. 😂😂😂 I mean, I know WHAT I wrote, like what happened and everything, but I can’t recall any distinct words???

              Liked by 1 person

              • Yeah, I was sleepy enough that I probably started writing a minute after midnight instead of right on the dot. xD

What’s weird is I’m sure I had written a scene and apparently I hadn’t, and I was annoyed because I didn’t want to write a villain’s lines again right before he massacres people if I had already written it. >.< But maybe it was in an older comic draft…

  2. OH DEAR NANO’S TOMORROW HOW DO I LIVE!!!!! So happy to be a part of the Squad, General Chipmunk (is that your name now?)! Eeek, I can’t wait to find out what the dares will be!!!!

Please excuse me whilst I go take your advice and scream quietly at my computer because I HAVE ONLY 24 HOURS AND I’M NOT READY FOR THIS HELP!! I really do not have a good feeling about this one… Camp went amazing, I felt prepared, I felt ready, I felt excited. Now…. I feel like I’m sooooo unprepared!! Maybe I should just…. print out my handy dandy checklist I had for July, read all the good, inspirational stuff I did for Camp, and yeah… take a glance over my puny, little outline which will hopefully take me through Nano… highly doubtful, but I know not what to do! :( XD

    • I’M THINKING THE EXACT SAME THING, ANNA. THE EXACT. SAME. THING. 😂 I suppose you could call me General Chipmunk… Or perhaps I’m just a happy Squad Member? MAYBE I CAN BE KNOWN AS AGENT CHIPMUNK!!!! Oh, yes!! The glorious dares!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! This is going to be FANTASTIC…

YES! TAKE MY ADVICE! TAKE IT! *flings advice at your face* I actually don’t feel prepared at all, either. It’s like everything is crumbling beneath my fingers??? But I’m patiently waiting up so that I can begin editing furiously at midnight. XD

DUDE, YOU ARE GOING TO BE FANTASTIC!! This month is going to be so wonderful! YOU’VE GOT THIS!!!

  3. This post XD I like the fact that the “talk to me peasants” section is just about as long as the rest of the post. #priorities

But NaNo starts tomorrow and I’m pretty sure I’m already dead. D: Oh, boy. But, hey, with you guys around, at least I’ll have fun, right? Gotta think on the positive! *skips along into the Abyss of Doom*

Hahaha…haha… It’s been five days into NaNo now, and I’m pretty sure I died somewhere between day one and day three…

BUT YES!!! This month is going to be SO much fun!!! How’s the NaNo going??? Has the Abyss of Doom destroyed you yet???? (I hope it has not…)

        • Yeah, I was pretty deflated when I realized the plothole, it could really mess things up. But…my whole draft is pretty messy and I’m just trying to work through all my ideas and get things down so I decided if it doesn’t work because of one piece, I’ll just throw that little piece out.

AAAAAAA!! Those aren’t cookies!! *Rubs sting on face*

This is just a first draft, so it can be ALL OF THE MESSY, with ALL OF THE PLOT HOLES, and all of those things can be fixed LATER. That’s what second and third and fourth and fifth drafts are for!!!! … *distant sobbing*

OOPS! Sorry!!! *hands you a bandaid*

            • I just really need to understand an antagonist’s power structure AND WHY WAS HIS FAMILY IN A WARZONE???!!! AND HE WASN’T???!!

Unless, he was WITH his family when the attack happened and had to fight through it…and saw everyone die…That would be interesting…

              Liked by 1 person

              • Ooh. Antagonists are some of the hardest elements for me. But I love how you’re going about trying to figure it out! Having him fight through an attack and see everyone die sounds like a wonderful idea.

And also quite terrible. For him, at least.

                But mostly wonderful. 😂😂😂

                    • The only problem is she is very chipper and happy throughout the story, and I’m just like, “Your mom and siblings are DEAD! HOW ARE YOU HAPPY?!!” She’s very hard to imagine sad, or at least, she will shatter everyone’s hearts into a million pieces if she is. Poor Void Lord.

                      Liked by 1 person

                    • Perhaps she is just a very EXTREME optimist?? You could totally use this to your advantage and have her creative voice be the source of light in all the darkness surrounding her!!

I DON’T WANT MY HEART SHATTERED. KEEP HER HAPPY, PLEASE!!! XD

                      Liked by 1 person

                    • Exactly, she is mostly going to be super happy and optimistic throughout the whole thing, I’m just concerned that since most of her family died when she was 11, shouldn’t she have Dark, Tragic feelings about it? She shows up a few years after that, so she’s had time to grieve, but I just want to be careful that since she’s naturally happy it won’t look like she just glossed over her grief and pretends it doesn’t exist. However, I think she’s also come to terms with it. Probably because she has a better support system than anyone else in the whole entire galaxy…
The story definitely needs someone innately happy like her. The Void Lord ISN’T happy though…

                      Liked by 1 person

                    • Hmmm… That’s a very good point. And I think the mixture between happiness and grief for optimists is a very hard balance to find, but it does exist! I think through most of the story, since she’s already had time to grieve, would have her being extremely optimistic and happy, but I also think certain things or memories would set her off a bit and turn her mood darker.

And I’m sure this isn’t the direction you want to go, but there could ALSO be the fact that — since she was so young when it happened — she’s sort of lulled herself into a twisted state of fantasy, in which she just ignores the fact that it ever happened, simply because it hurts too much to think about. Her extreme happiness, then, would just be a facade to the hurting little girl beneath. (This is just another way you could spin things, I guess. XD)

Support systems are AMAZING and work wonders for sadness. I’m really glad Sheyla had one!!!

Awwwwwwwww! Poor Void Lord!!!! I do hope he gets a happy ending, too… (I literally cannot help loving the bad guys. I am odd. XD )

                      Liked by 1 person

                    • I’m sure it’ll show up in some quiet moments for her, and I don’t think she’ll put on a false facade, her happiness should be more stable and genuine. I think she’ll figure that her mom would want to be happy instead of wallow in despair, so she’s focused on what’s positive in the world. And staying herself.

The Void Lord is a very loveable villain. Though he is more antagonist than villain.

Naomi is the innately happy one.
Sheyla is the innately, “I am doomed and everyone wants me dead,” one.
                      *Awkward pause*

YES! Until he becomes consumed with fire and turns into a FLAMING MARSHMALLOW OF GLORY AND DESTROYS EVERYTHING IN HIS PATH!!! Thankfully he is an everlasting burning marshmallow.

Ohhhhhh… Actually, you know, this description of the two characters makes MUCH more sense now… XD Sheyla does seem very “I am doomed and everyone wants me dead.” XD But AWWWWWW!!! Naomi is adorable and perfection, as well!!

You know, I am very pleased with this character’s story arc. XD Carry on with his path of destruction and smoldering flame.
YES!!! AT LAST!! A character I like that doesn’t die!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Yes, I think the Void Lord should be safe throughout the story, but I also have the problem of not being able to kill off developed characters unless my first image of them is as they die. But if they’re doing stuff, alive, then I want to KEEP THEM ALIVE. Even if they are fighting constantly, how do they survive? Somebody will have to get killed off at some point. I’m rather worried who it will be…

YAY!! I am quite grateful to you that he does not die… Usually I pick the characters that DO die, and then I cry bitter tears of despair. 😂 Yeah, I have trouble killing off characters that I like… I once killed off my favorite dragon, and I had these grand plans of bringing him back to life. 😂😂😂 WAIT. Yes, he is too key to the plot, whatever happens. But the others are not so safe. War may take them, I do not know…I read one story recently where one of my favorite characters died and I cried. On the other hand he technically died of old age years after the main adventure. BUT STILL! IT WAS SAD!!!
                      Poor dragon. You should send some characters on a quest to resurrect him. ;_;

Awwwww!!! :((( That is so sad!!! I’m sorry! :((( But at least he died of old age, and not when he was adventuring, right? But, actually, that almost makes it worse…

He actually was resurrected in the sequel! (The sequel that I never wrote, but STILL. XD ) I’m kind of planning on rewriting the entire story and giving it a major revamp, so I have a second chance with my smol dragon friend!!!! XD

HA! Yesssss! He shall live in the revamp, I believe. I love him too much to destroy him twice. 😂😂😂 I’ve never seen Mulan, but it’s one of those movies that I REALLY want to watch! I think it’s on Netflix, so I’ll probably be watching it soon!!!

100% agree. Gotta have an emotional connection to things to care. And the death was really well connected to the theme and plot of the story.

                      Yay! Dragons!!!

I wonder who’s death would be the most gut-wrenching in my story… *The plot has not supplied the person, so it’s not happening*

                    • Oh, I’m not talking about ANYTHING at all…

The Void Lord is for sure not dying.

I guess that leaves Rob and Sheyla… *MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!*
*Goes to rewrite my entire story as a Romeo and Juliet retelling. Totally*

                    • I know, it would be pretty epic, but I’m not super familiar with Shakespeare, I’ve only read a few plays for school and such, so I am not the apt person to make such a retelling.
Also, it’s not like Sheyla has any powerful, living parents to be a counterpoint to Rob’s family…

                    • Same, though! XD I’m really not familiar with any of his work, other than the MAIN story of Romeo and Juliet. I should probably force myself to sit down and read some of his plays… XD Awww, poor thing!!! :(((( But that is very true… That kind of ruins the whole premise of the retelling, then. XD

                    • That would be fun! We’ll all dress up and act super cultured! xD

I guess technically it’s already happening? And I guess Cinderella provides the happy ending so they won’t die like in R&J.
But what else is it like…?
Man, I want to think of another iconic story that would really change the mood of it, but I can’t. xD

                    • I was thinking of serious dressing up, not quite Fake Mustache Dressing Up…
                      xD

It may not be a normal sort of happy ending, but I do want Sheyla and Rob to survive to the end. Somehow.
                      xD

Around the Galaxy in 800 Days. I’m not sure that quite fits with the thing. But it sounds funny.

                    • Oh, I knew that! But I shall still wear the fake mustache. XD

Well, as long as they SURVIVE, I shall be a content bean. It is their premature deaths that shall have me sobbing for three million years. XD

YES. I NEED THIS STORY!!!! XD You must write it! Or I shall. Or we shall write it together. Xd

                    • That kinda messes up the serious dressing up. XD

Let us hope they survive to the end, and live past it. Or I shall wail along with my readers as they chase me with pitchforks and fire.

I think I am precluded from writing it right now. xD

                    • Yes, you care SO much for the feelings of characters as they all fall murdered around you… xD

Sheyla is not doing well, but at least with that plan she would also get to finally be with Rob.
So he can give her anxiety attacks too! (He really doesn’t want that to be happening though.)
