Rapunzel, Rapunzel // a poem

good morning, cyberspace!

Just two days ago I emerged from my completely unexpected February half-hiatus with a brief recap of all things February Freeze Out. And I’d been debating whether or not I should post that smudge on Sunday, seeing as though Tuesday was only a couple days out, but in my excitement to finally be posting again, I refused to listen to the logic of long-term and posted it immediately.

Which left me with virtually nothing to post today.

However, luckily for me, I had another poem lodge itself into my brain last weekend and demand I write it, which means i don’t have to expend any time or energy into writing a really complicated blog post I get to share another fun little piece of randomness with you all!

HUZZAH!

I’m really not sure why these things keep popping into my head, though. Apparently poems think I’m a poet now?? Poor souls. Someone should tell them I’m a fraud.

But this weird little poem gives me something to post this week, so I’m not complaining. Next week I have a really exciting smudge planned (if I can finish the thing on time, of course), so I’m extremely excited about that.

But as of right now, please accept the weirdness I’m about to fling at your face and know that next week we shall sally forth back into regularly scheduled programming.

RAPUNZEL, RAPUNZEL

by Mackenzie Keene

Rapunzel, Rapunzel

Let down your hair.

Have you no fear of falling,

Perched so high, way up there?

Rapunzel, Rapunzel,

With hair spun like gold,

Will you sit in your tower,

Till you’re gray and you’re old?

Why do you just stay

In your tower like so

As you let the whole world

Slip unnoticed below?

Don’t you know that your years

Slip away oh-so fast?

It won’t stop for a minute,

And your youth will not last.

Rapunzel, Rapunzel,

You’re reckless, my dear.

You’re wasting your life,

Locked away way out here.

Rapunzel, Rapunzel,

Let your hair down, please do,

So that I may climb up,

And come to your rescue.

“Dear prince,” you call down,

From your tower so high,

“Your chivalry’s commended,

But I must ask you–why?

Why must I come down

To the earth below far,

When I’m happier here,

This close to the stars?

The moon sings me to sleep

Every single night.

And if I do fall,

My dear sir, I’ll take flight.

I don’t fear the drop,

For I’ve never felt so free.

No, I think I’ll stay here.

Go away. Leave me be.”

Rapunzel, Rapunzel,

I now must insist.

Please let down your hair.

It won’t hurt a bit.

The clock keeps on ticking,

Our death comes so soon.

What good are the stars, then?

What comes of the moon?

“Oh, leave me alone,”

You snap and you scoff.

“I’ve no need for a prince,

And I chopped my hair off.”

TALK TO ME, PEASANTS!

Sorry for yet another bizarrely random post, folks. Things have been a little bumpy around here lately, but I do think it’s all going to even out soon! Beginning with next week, when I shall–hopefully–be able to announce something very exciting to you all. . . MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

But anyway, let’s discuss some future posts, shall we?: What kinds of things are you hoping to see more of from me in the future? More writing challenges (a.k.a. more punishment posts because I ALWAYS fail these), more chats with my character casts, more poetry (please no), writing hacks/advice, non-writerly related stuff, tags? I have a few ideas for future posts, but now it’s just a matter of pegging down what you guys are hoping to see more of. So go ahead and tell me ALL OF THE THINGS! you’d like to see, and I’ll do my best to get on it!

And also make sure to tell me what you think of this poem. Because . . . you know. I wrote it. XD

As always, until next time. . .

  1. Haha!! I was literally reading through the poem just WAITING for your Kenzieishness to catch up with the romance and whack it on the nose with a sassy ending. XD You cannot fool me no matter how many princes and golden hairs you sprinkle into your poems, Kenzie. XD Great poem!! <3 I love these poem posts of yours! :)

    • *blinks* I have become too predictable. …..I must switch up my methods…. 😂😂😂 But I mean having a Kenzieishness sounds amazing so I don’t really want to give that up??? 😂 EEP. CRICKET, YOU ARE THE SWEETEST. Thank you SO much! And I’m so happy you like the poems! I much prefer having them just come to me, rather than me going off to find them, because then it’s a much more enjoyable process. 😂

    • Oh goodness. XD Well, I’ve always been in love with astronomy, so the stars thing just kind of bleeds into all of my poetry, but the chopping off hair bit. . .that may or may not have reminded me a lot of The Kate. XD
