good morning, cyberspace!
About three million years ago, I was tagged by Penny from over at A Southern Belle With Stories To Tell (is that not the most amazing blog name ever, or what???) for her very own tag–The Star Wars Character Tag!
Now, I had intended to do this tag a lot sooner than I am–because it’s STAR WARS and CHARACTERS and WRITING all jumbled up into one thing???? what’s not to love about this????–but, as always, life decided to get in the way and crush all my bloggerly hopes and dreams. But I’m here now, so hopefully that makes my tardiness acceptable.
Maybe.
probably not.
Ahem. Moving on. As you will probably find out in May (when I post my Camp NaNoWriMo recap), the first few weeks of Camp NaNoWriMo have been . . . difficult, to say the least. Mostly because I’ve been struggling with my characters, which is a problem I was completely oblivious to before the month began. I thought I had this project pegged down to a crisp little T, but apparently I was woefully, grossly mistaken. So between struggling to figure my characters out over the past two weeks, beta reading my third beta book of the year (it’s another amazing one. i have no clue how i know so many talented people), and overall just trying to survive life, I have been horribly neglecting my blog this month, and really have no time or energy into coming up with something genuinely creative myself.
Thus the reason I’m doing a tag today! Because as all bloggers know, when you’re creatively dry and can think of literally nothing to post, tags are your absolute bestest of friends. And I am EXTREMELY excited about this tag in particular, because it involves two of my absolute favorite things: characters and Star Wars.
let’s just ignore the fact that it’s my characters which have been giving me trouble for the past two weeks and pretend everything’s holly and jolly here at the studio, shall we? okay.
So let’s dive right in!
— THE STAR WARS CHARACTER TAG —
. . . THE RULES . . .
1. THERE ARE NO RULES
2. Refer to number 1
3. There is one absolute rule: you MUST use your own characters (OC’s) for this tag. (brownie points if you add pictures of your characters) >> Done! Although I didn’t use pictures. . . Aha. But I’m really excited for this, because I get to use ALL of my characters. . . MWAHAHAHAHAHA!
4. The Sorta Rule: Scream a huge thank you to whoever tagged you for this whilst treating them to a pizza dinner at your favorite pizza chain >> THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAGGING ME, PENNY!!!!! *flings pineapple pizza at your face*
5. The Kinda Rule: Include this link in the post so that The Penny can read everyone’s answers to this smol strange tag (note from Kenzie: make sure the link is actually linking to the post, rather than just a string of text. Otherwise it won’t notify Penny that you’ve done the tag. *thumbs up*): https://asouthernbellewithstoriestotell.wordpress.com/2019/02/18/the-star-wars-character-tag-i-made-my-own-tag-halp/
6. The Rule That’s Not Really A rule But It Would Be Great: Include the graphic and tag at least three Jedi or Sith Lords
. . . THE TAG . . .
ONE . . . Who’s your Obi Wan Kenobi? (sassy, a great mentor, but can be a bit strict)
Jumping right into the questions, here, this one has to go to Iniko from The Girl and The Goblin King. There’s really no other answer for it. Iniko is an old, hunch-backed wizard who lives within the pages of my half-completed NaNoWriMo 2018 novel, and he is absolutely, 100% the best mentor I’ve ever written.
And also simultaneously the worst mentor, which makes him absolute perfection, in my totally not biased opinion.
A few of his past-times include:
- whacking people with his cane when they misbehave
- pretending to know exactly what he’s doing and then leading everyone headfirst into danger
- being sassy (it’s in the job description, after all)
- having a seriously cool beard that defies the laws of physics
TWO . . . Who’s Your Leia Organa? (feisty, incredible comebacks, and does their own thing)
This one took a little more thought than the first question, but I think I’ve finally decided on Petunia from The Girl and The Goblin King. (there are a lot of TGATGK characters in this. how odd.) Petunia is one of those characters who just demands respect. She’s stubborn and prim–probably has a bit of an English accent–and is absolutely unafraid to speak her mind–especially to Iniko. She’s just this prissy, clever little flower, and I love her with my whole heart..
THREE . . . Who’s Your Finn? (overeager, adorable, a cinnamon roll)
This question has to be Shelby from SK, which is–in case you didn’t already know this–my Camp NaNoWriMo project for this month. I know I haven’t mentioned this book very much yet–or at all, for that matter–but don’t worry. There’ll be a post coming out at the beginning of May that will tell you all a little bit more about this story. But for now, just hang tight and let me talk about characters you have absolutely no clue about, okay? Okay.
So Shelby. She’s fiery but precious, smol yet strong, and will 10/10 knock out your teeth if you cross her. HOWEVER. She’s also incredibly sweet and kind and has a heart of gold, loves books with every ounce of her being, is pretty much a Labrador puppy in human form, and is basically the cutest little bean to have ever walked across the pages of SK. So. 100% Finn.
also I know very precious little about Finn, so I’m hoping I’m pegging him right, but still. Shelby’s getting this question, and I guess that’s that.
FOUR . . . Who’s Your Padmé? (kind, loving, but also kick butt)
It took me an embarrassingly long time to think of the answer to this, but now that it’s finally hit me, I’m a little upset I didn’t think of it sooner.
Bella from everlost. 100%. This character has been through a lot, and not just fictionally. Her entire character and personality–and even some of her backstory–have changed rather drastically between drafts of everlost, but I finally feel like she’s starting to shine through as the character she was always meant to be.
Bella was a very difficult nut to crack–somewhat, I’d like to think, like Padme would have been. She’s sweet and stubborn and helpful, will do literally anything for those she loves, and has a soul of purest gold.
However, if you cross her or hurt someone she cares for, she will absolutely slap you in the face with a frying pan. Bella may seem small in stature, but she’s got a fiery spirit that refuses to be broken.
Writing Bella was a constant struggle due to her nature of shutting everyone–including her writer–out, but once I knew a little bit more about who she is and where she comes from, it was a TON of fun to write in the little scenes where her stubborn temper peaks through. I think there’s still some work to be done with this one, but hopefully by the time EV is finished, she’ll be just as three-dimensional as Adaline and Thao are in my head.
FIVE . . . Who’s Your Count Dooku? (deliciously evil, extra, and sick burns)
Jevron from everlost all the way. This guy’s personality really didn’t shine through properly until the fourth draft of EV, but once he finally got some good page time . . . holy guacamole, my friends. I fell absolutely in love with this character, and I’m extremely excited to get to write him some more in the future.
Also this guy’s 100% extra and is basically just Thao in villain form so I mean??? << absolute perfection, right there, amiright?
SIX . . . Who’s Your BB-8? (too cute, everyone loves them, can do no wrong)
This would probably be Ollie from SK. I can’t really go into too much detail on this guy quite yet, but I CAN say that he’s extremely lovable, even more forgetful, is a friend to everyone, and is basically the smol pet of the rest of SK’s cast. Everyone watches out for Ollie, and they’d all rather chop off their own hand than see something bad happen to him.
Ollie also loves to play games, but unfortunately he can never remember which one he’s actually supposed to be playing.
SEVEN . . . Who’s Your Yoda? (underestimated, extra, and wise)
Oh goodness. These questions are HARD. I’m not really sure I have characters for some of these, but I’ll try to do the best I can.
As far as Yoda goes, I think the best answer I have for this is Adaline from everlost.
Now, I know you’re all staring at me right about now with mouths gaping open and wondering what on earth I’m talking about with this answer, but just hear me out, okay? Yoda is an odd character. He’s constantly speaking in what feels like riddles, knows far more than he lets on, is slightly insane, and is generally just a very cryptic smol bean of a character.
Kind of like Adaline. She’s bizarre, a little Luna Lovegood-ish, often speaks in riddles that only she understands, knows way more than she lets on, and is actually a lot smarter than people give her credit for.
And as far as extra goes, I think anyone who reads the very first chapter of everlost will attest that she is . . . somewhat extra. Aha.
So yes. In my fantasy world, Adaline is Yoda. Don’t even try contradicting me on this.
EIGHT . . . Who’s Your Anakin Skywalker? (bratty, rebellious, whiny)
As a general rule, I try very hard not to write whiny characters. (they annoy me, okay? don’t judge.) HOWEVER, the whiniest character I think I’ve ever written is Peter from everlost.
Aha. Let me explain myself yet again.
Through drafts 1 and 2 of everlost, Peter was . . . annoying. Severely annoying. And, unfortunately, this was a glaring flaw in his character that I was COMPLETELY oblivious to until my mom started reading EV’s second draft. I don’t want to go into too much detail about this (because it’s embarassing ahahahaha), but I can tell you that Peter was very whiny, WAY too monologue-y, droned on and on in his inward thoughts about the most boring–and annoying–of things, and pretty much made up at least half of the words I cut from everlost’s third and fourth drafts. I sliced so much filler out of his chapters that it got to the point where my eyes started to hurt from all the eyerolls I was doing.
Thankfully, however, it would seem as though I did my job and made him a lot less of a mess–a task that I was determined to accomplish with EV’s third and fourth drafts–because my mom read the fourth draft of EV and told me he was a lot less annoying this time around! So I mean??? Maybe there’s still hope for this little guy, after all. *strokes bloody hatchet lovingly*
NINE . . . Who’s Your C3-PO? (always worrying, gives depressing information, constantly wailing)
Beau. 100% Beau from SK. (yes, that’s a weird name. just go with it.)
Now, I wouldn’t say Beau’s constantly wailing, but he’s definitely got that sort of eccentricity that C3-PO is known for. He’s constantly trying to make himself the boss of everyone else, is extremely pessimistic when he feels like it, and is pretty much the only character I can think of right off the bat that resembles C3-PO. So. There you have it.
TEN . . . Who’s Your Luke Skywalker? (hero, has been through a lot, has their share of flaws)
I’m going to have to give this final question to Ed from SK. Again, I can’t really divulge too much information about this character (because it would be spoilers for both the story and also the post I’m planning for May), but I CAN tell you that this guy has been through a lot–and has put ME through a lot in return. His backstory is quite possibly one of the saddest I’ve ever written, and his voice was–dare I say it–even harder to crack than Bella’s. He’s hurt and broken and has way too many scars, but though he tries very desperately to block out the entire world, his friends–most old, one new–absolutely refuse to let him do this. They help him through the tough times and, eventually, help him begin to heal.
I’m seriously in love with this character’s arc and story, and I am so happy to finally be writing it. Let’s just hope I can do the visions in my head justice.
And those, my friends, were all the questions! Some of those were extremely difficult to answer (which is embarrassing, considering how much I love Star Wars), but hopefully I did both Star Wars and my characters justice.
Now, however, it’s time to tag some people!! I have no clue how many of you have already been tagged for this, seeing as though it took me forever to finally jump on board with this tag, so I’m just gonna tag some peeps and call it good. *insert nervous laughter*
TAG! You’re it!
- Ruby
- Sarah
- Ally ~ The Nature of Pages
- Kinsey
- . . . and you! If this tag looks like something you’d love to do, go right ahead and steal it for yourself like the happy little pirate you’ve always been destined to be! (go on. you know you want to.)
Of course, this post would not be complete without another GIANT thank you to Penny for creating this tag and tagging me! You are an absolute ray of sunshine, and this tag was such a blast to do! Clearly you understand my soul, because a Star Wars character tag was exactly the thing I needed to get myself excited to write again.
Now I’m just gonna go ride this inspirational wave and get some words down before my laptop dies. . .
TALK TO ME, PEASANTS!
Let’s talk about characters, shall we? Which of your original characters do you think is most like Yoda? Have you ever written a character that was tough to crack? (Ed absolutely refused to talk to me during the first two weeks of NaNo, so THAT was fun.) Who is your absolute favorite character from Star Wars? Do you even watch Star Wars? and most importantly. . .
DO YOU PREFER THE ORIGINAL THREE OR THE PREQUELS???
(I’ll probably get a lot of flak for this, but I prefer the prequels. ahahahahahahahaha.) As always, let’s talk about ALL OF THE THINGS! down in the comments below! And until next time. . .

I DID DO THE TAG!!! And it was absolutely phenomenal! I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to get to it sooner. It’s been on my To-Write list. XD Thank you SO much for tagging me, Penny! You made a super fun tag!!

Iniko sounds like a fun character, and it was cool to hear how your EV characters have grown through the drafts. But man, I can see how Adaline is the most Yoda-ish character of the lot, but she rather has the dynamic that if she were turned loose on the world…there would be much chaos. I don’t think Yoda would like that. xD
I like the originals and the prequels, I prefer the originals because all the characters and dialogue are consistently good (no JarJar, no angry Anakin, etc.) but I really like the prequels because it has a nice chunk of political intrigue and the action good.

Iniko IS a fun character. XD Honestly, the main reason I miss writing that story is because of him. He’s perfection.
OOOH. I love your thoughts on this… And you are very correct, I’m afraid. XD Hmm… Maybe she’s what Yoda would be if he turned Sith… XD
Honestly, all this talk of Star Wars is making me want to rewatch them again. XD The originals ARE good for what they are, and that’s why I love them, but the graphics in the prequels (because they were made later) are SO COOL. And the lightsaber battles are absolute perfection!! But I will admit that JarJar and Anakin can be quite annoying. XD (Obi-Wan is awesome, though… And Qui-Gonn!)

Oh my goodness I just want to read all your stories and hug all your characters. THEY SOUND LIKE THE ABSOLUTE BEST.
“Ollie also loves to play games, but unfortunately he can never remember which one he’s actually supposed to be playing” HA. That doesn’t sound possible but at the same time…it’s vaguely relatable?
And Thao in villain form is…terrifying, but also awesome.
(if I die without having read everlost, it will be the greatest tragedy the world has known.)
Anyway this is SUCH a fun tag, and when I saw you tagged me I was so excited. XD I can’t wait to do this. Even though I’ve only ever seen the original trilogy?? So maybe I’m not a real Star Wars fan. But I’m very fond of it so that should count for something. Han is actually my favourite character, so I’m a little sad he’s not one of the questions haha–and one of my characters would be PERFECT for him!–but oh well. XD
I’m glad you finally got Ed to talk to you. Do you think it has anything to do with the fact that his backstory IS the saddest one you’ve ever written? Cause I have a character who I’m having a REALLY hard time breaking his reserve, and while he is by nature somewhat reserved, I feel like the horrible things that happened to him kind of magnified it and made it even HARDER for me (or his friends) to get through to the real him. I don’t know if that’s how it is with Ed at all, of course, but I thought it was an interesting question.

Oh my goodness. You have literally NO idea how happy this makes me. It’s so weird to think that through this blog I get to share my stories with other people and they’ll grow to know the characters and love them like I do and just!!!! THIS ENTIRE COMMENT MAKES ME SO HAPPY, SARAH, YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW.
I honestly think Ollie is just a self-insert on my part. XD He’s so much like the marshmallow part of my brain, and I love him so much for it. XD
(I’m fairly certain you will not die before you get to read everlost. I hope. I mean, I don’t know the future of this story, but if it’s up to me, you will DEFINITELY not die before getting to read it. XD)
I know, right?? This tag is awesome!! And DUDE. HAN IS THE BEST. I mean, personally I think my favorite character is Obi Wan, but that might have to do with the fact that I’ve seen the prequels as well as the original trilogy, and am on the very unnatural side of liking the prequels better. (the initial trilogy is still phenomenal, though! And my favorite character in the original three is definitely Han.) I mean, if you have a character that would be perfect for Han, I don’t see why you couldn’t add a bonus character? Han is definitely a staple, and must be represented. *nods*
UM. OKAY, BUT THAT IS LIKE EXACTLY WHAT IS WRONG WITH HIM. I’ve known for some time that his past (his horrible awful no-good past that I TOTALLY did not thrust upon him. nope. not at all. *sweats nervously*) has sort of made him a calloused shell of the person he used to be, and I also know that it’s my characters who’s backstories are the hardest/most painful are typically the hardest characters for me to crack. But I don’t think I could have ever put it into such perfect words as you have. That is EXACTLY what’s wrong with him, and it’s not until he meets another character (his B-story character, according to Save The Cat!) that he finally begins to open up and allow himself to come back to who he once was. But yeah. You’ve really hit the nose on the head with this…. I’m actually really impressed with your perceptiveness. XD

It IS a weird thought, isn’t it? That’s how I felt after reading your comment on my Spring Cleaning Tag post, except you said it really well, while my brain just kind of went in confused happy circles and failed to come up with coherent words to express the feeling. XD
BUT YES! All the characters sound so fantastic and I already love them so much. Especially Ollie.
(Hurrah! Whenever I do die, then, I can die happy. Having read everlost.)
YES HAN. Also YES BONUS CHARACTER. that’s a great idea. *nods emphatically in unison*
Oh my goodness POOR ED. Poor, poor Ed. *hugs Ed* *glares at you*
(Also Save the Cat! sounds great and I want to read it sometime. And figure out what on earth a B-story character is lol)

Yes!!! It is SO weird! XD And oh my word no. XD I’m pretty sure my description was STILL just a bunch of rambly heart-happiness. XD
Okay, but Ollie is absolutely precious and I am so glad someone loves him… He’s a smol little cinnamon roll and needs love.
(WAIT. I feel like this is a quote from something, but I can’t remember what… XD)
DO THE BONUS CHARACTER!!! DO IT!!!! *waves batons around*
Holy guacamole, YES!! Read Save The Cat! if you can!! This is a book that I will absolutely fling into ANY writer’s face. 10/10 recommend this one!!! (and then we can talk about B-Story characters and plot beats and ALL of the lovely things!!!)
