Camp NaNoWriMo, April 2022 – In Which I Will Most Certainly Regret This

good morning, cyberspace!

Camp NaNoWriMo is back, peasants!

I’m a sucker for a good April Camp NaNoWriMo session, and I could not be more excited for the projects I’ve decided to tackle next month! It’s going to be a highly chaotic adventure filled with words and characters and ALL of the storytelling goodness, and I am very very excited to bring you all along for the ride! I will also most certainly regret biting off this much, but ya know. It’s all part of the journey, right? XD

CAMP NANOWRIMO, APRIL 2022 – THE PROJECTS

EEP! First thing’s first, let’s talk about the projects I’m going to be working on next month, shall we? And yes. You’re reading that correctly. Projects. With a plural!

See, I may have the world’s worst track record for staying consistent online, but let me tell ya, friends, behind the scenes, I’m actually kinda sorta staying pretty steady with the writing? A few short weeks ago I could not have said that, but after much self-reflection and more than a few necessary pep talks (both from my reflection and others), I realized I needed to swallow a chill pill and just… you know… do the things.

And here I finally am. Doing the things. Despite all the odds stacked in a neat little tower against me. (seriously, guys, that thing is taller than my TBR at this point) It feels weird, I’ll admit. But also really, really good to be creating again. And though it may be the very thing that breaks my last shreds of sanity next month, we’re gonna take a stab at dual-wielding stories!

Because whyever not, am I right?

Which projects am I working on next month, you might ask? Well! I’m happy to tell you!

STORY ONE – PROJECT SUNSET

As y’all probably could have guessed, I’m going to continue working on Project Sunset next month! After my whole re-outline retreat earlier this year, my enjoyment of this story has increased tenfold, which means that my desire to do heavy content edits has also increased! Usually content edits freak me out, but this revisional process has actually been… fun? (hopefully I didn’t just jinx something. “knock knock knock knock knock, knock on wood!”) Three chapters down and twenty-five to go, I think working on this book over the course of April is really going to help me feel rather grounded in the world of stories. It’s like a fresh dose of insanity after too much time in reality, and I could not be more thankful that God placed this little story into my lap.

STORY TWO – THE WORST PROJECT

I… am particularly excited about this one. A few months ago, I was getting ready for work when an Idea simply popped itself into my head. One of my favorite things is playing with words and phrases, and sometimes–if I’m very, very lucky–my brain will reward me for its relentless wandering with a clever notion.

And goodness gracious, did it give me one that morning. So, being completely wrapped up in the re-outlining process of PROJECT SUNSET at the time, I decided to just jot the idea down and return to it later. Fast forward a month or so, and not only do I have smol seedlings sprouting forth from this idea begging to be written, but I also have…. a partner in crime.

One of my dear friends is an incredible artist, and together, we decided to take this smol idea and turn it into a graphic novel! Or maybe a webcomic? We’re not entirely sure yet. XD BUT! We’ve started brainstorming and throwing character descriptions and settings against the wall to see what sticks, and y’all. I am SO excited to get to share this story with all of you someday! It definitely feels like my inner Tim Burton is clawing towards the surface of my psyche, and it’s just been so much fun, I can’t. XD

THE GOALS

So obviously, if I’ve got multiple projects for next month, I also have multiple goals! And since I am obviously a huge goal-setter (although not always the best goal achiever) I’m going to talk about them very briefly here!

First up–

PROJECT SUNSET

Since this is going to be my “main” project for the foreseeable future, it only stands to reason that this is the project which receives the most labor hours. I’ve been doing my best to work on it every chance I get, but April is my chance to really hit crunch time on this deadline. I’m extremely excited to get this novel polished up, and I think that’s going to be the best motivator to finish it on time!

All that said, my goal for this project is to reach 30,000 words in the manuscript by April 30th. Personally, I think this goal seems a little small, but I’m aware that next month is probably going to get filled up with Life-ishness, and therefore I’m trying to be reasonably optimistic!

While, you know, giving myself multiple deadlines and storyworlds to juggle, but ya know.

THE WORST PROJECT

Since this is just a smol little bby project at the moment, my goal for this is mostly brainstorming, which means it’s a very easy peasy kind of project. However, “brainstorm” isn’t necessarily a category that Camp NaNoWriMo appreciates, so I’ve tried to create a more tangible goal–specifically one that utilizes words.

So after much debate, I’ve decided to make my goal 5,000 words. This provides enough room for brainstorming, while also giving me a bit of a breather between working full time and drafting multiple thousands of words for PROJECT SUNSET. I suspect that the actual writing of this thing is going to take more time than just a single month, as finding the time to sit down with my partner in crime and actually do the thing will–more than likely–be spread out over the course of multiple weeks. BUT! I think 5,000 words of solid brainstorm material is a pretty decent place to start!

And that’s about all I’ve got to say about these projects! As of right now, we’re about 7 days away from Camp NaNoWriMo. It’s going to be a crazy month–filled with many, many long hours, I can already tell. But it will be good, I think, to push myself and find my limits creatively. Sometimes it takes us finding our breaking points to discover just how far we can actually go, and if this is something I want to do with my life, I think now is the perfect time to start.

talk to me, peasants!

And that, my friends, is my goal for Camp NaNoWriMo next month! So tell me: Are you participating in Camp NaNoWriMo next month? If so, what project (or projects!) are you working on? And if not, what are you most excited about in the month of April?

Let’s talk about all of the Spring-ish goodness down in the comments below! And until next time…

  1. EEEEE!!!! THIS ALL SOUNDS AMAZIIIING. That is wonderful you’ve been doing so much storywork behind the scenes! :D

You know I am SO excited for Project Sunset, and am 10000% cheering you on as you keep at it. And, okay, but a joint graphic novel project that’s Tim Burton-esque???? :O THS SOUNDS LIKE THE BEST. IDEA. EVERRR. Despite it being called “The Worst Project”. :P I kind of adore that project name. It’s too great.

Oh man oh man oh man, I’m ecstatic over alllll of this! I do hope you have the absolute BEST Camp NaNo to date!

I don’t think I’ll be joining this year. Right now I’m mostly editing, and I found out pretty quickly editing coupled with NaNo events don’t work well for me, alas. I THRIVE doing NaNo for a first draft, but when editing I just need to take my time and not obsessively keep up with wordcounts. *sheepish grin* So I won’t “officially” be doing Camp NaNo, but I DO hope to make a ton of headway with edits come April, so I’ll be joining you guys in spirit!

It’s gonna be an awesome month of story creating! :D

    • I’m also way too excited about Project Sunset, which is a PROBLEM because I just…need to write the darn thing. XD But! It definitely helps being excited about it, because that just makes me want to write it MORE. Right? XD And “The Worst Project” is definitely one of my favorite project titles thus far! I had a pretty good laugh when I thought of it… XD

Oh goodness, I TOTALLY understand this! It’s weird, but Camp NaNo actually stresses me out LESS than regular NaNo in the winter, even when I’m editing or revising? It’s the strangest thing. But also! I do love a good NaNo for a first draft. And that is so exciting that you’re going to make headway on your project!!! I hope we get to hear all about it!!! (I’m legit obsessed with everything you write…)

EEP! I cannot wait to work on stories with you, Christine! This is going to be incredible!

    • Oh no!!! XD Honestly, it is my life goal to get everyone just as obsessed with Camp NaNoWriMo as I am. XD I will not rest until everyone participates! MWAHAHAHAHA! XD But I definitely understand needing time for rest to rebuild the creative fuel!

Eep! Thank you so very much! I’m going to do my best to update this little blog with all of the writing adventures over the next few weeks!

  3. hi hi hi I am back like the sporadic owl I am! oops.

PROJECTS PLURAL?? whoaaaah you’re a very cool writer and you Got This! (I shall throw smarties at you one by one as encouragement and when the packet’s empty I’ll follow up with a lamington perhaps.)

“a fresh dose of insanity after too much time in reality” <- we all need to get back to our insanity I think xD I'm so glad that your passion for Project Sunset has been refreshed again!!

AND EEEK A GRAPHIC NOVEL?? WOW WOW WOw that is incredibly cool!!

Kenzie, it's really impressive seeing how you're lining up goals and putting in the passion for your writing! It's easy to get that drained away by Adult Life, until we say we have no time for anything creative, but you're fighting that!! I'm cheering for you, crazy cookie friend. And whether or not you completely achieve the exact goals you set, you're working towards your dream and that is Important!!

    • Meep! Okay, but this is exactly the kind of encouragement I needed today. Because YES my goals seem to be a little bit…uh…much. XD But I’m trying my best every day. Which is the important thing, ya know?

I’ll be doing Camp NaNo this year which is actually my first time doing it??? I have a lot of editing to do and need some sort of external motivation to sit my butt in my chair and write XD

    • Yes!!! I’m so excited to give it a whirl, and also collab with my friend. I think it’s going to be a marvelously epic time!

OOOH! Your first Camp NaNo??? Dude, please let me know how it goes! I’m so excited to see what you think! Personally, Camp NaNo makes me happier than regular NaNo, though I’m not entirely sure why. XD
