CAMP NANOWRIMO BEGINS!: Day 1 – Freebies and Frenzies!

GOOD MORNING, CYBERSPACE!

I’ve been flipping and flopping over how to start this month off here on Smudged Thoughts. As you all know, April’s Camp NaNoWriMo is one of my absolute F A V O R I T E months of the year, which means that I naturally want this first post–this first step into the month of April–to be something truly special.

I debated character interviews, Camp NaNoWriMo blog tags, pep talks, writing prompts. . . But none of them felt right. During all of this mental brainstorming, however, I was working on a side project of my own–a simple little thing that I was planning on using to make this Camp NaNoWriMo the best NaNoWriMo I’ve had thus far. Spurred on by my constant failure at tracking my writing process, I decided to delve into the confusion that is Google Spreadsheets and create my own kind of progress tracker–a tracker which, instead of being filled with a bunch of useless information I had no desire of knowing, was filled with the kinds of things I was actually excited to track.Read More »

CAMP NANOWRIMO APPROACHES!: Episode II – Preparing for Camp (#campnano2020)

GOOD MORNING, CYBERSPACE!

Last week I announced what project I was going to be working on for Camp NaNoWriMo 2020. This week, we’re going to be diving into my preparations for the end of the world Camp!

A few years ago I made a post detailing my NaNoWriMo Survival Kit, and–quite honestly–most of the things I listed in that post still apply. I still hoard candy like the smol little gremlin that I am. I still collect notebooks and hide them into every nook and cranny in my room. I still stuff my friends into my briefcase and haul them around lest they abandon me. However, there are some things I’m doing this year that are a little bit different than years previous. I have some new materials that I shall be trying to utilize for productivity in April (planners, a google spreadsheet??? [what is this madness??]) and–if all goes according to plan–hopefully they’ll help me conquer my goals and become the ultimate productivity master!

(this is not happening. i’m just gonna call it now, folks.)

So this week in my Camp NaNo 2020 series, we’re going to be taking a closer look into my step-by-step guide to preparing for Camp NaNoWriMo!Read More »

So This Is Christmas. . . (feat. a brief November recap, where I’ve been, what I’m reading, and a mess of a blog post)

WARNING: this post has virtually no direction whatsoever. please excuse the mess that awaits your eyeballs, for it has been a while since I have even thought about blogging. thank you.

good morning, cyberspace!

Goodness. It’s been a hot second since I’ve hopped onto the blogosphere, hasn’t it? I had every good intention of keeping you all updated on my NaNoWriMo progress throughout November, but that idea kinda fizzled into nonexistence once the month actually began. Truth is, November was a roller coaster. A crazy, hectic, maniacal beast of a roller coaster (please see the screen grab below), and I’m really quite surprised that I even made it out alive.

But the important thing is that I am alive, and I did survive, and, even though I have virtually no blog posts to commemorate or acknowledge last month, by golly, we did it, folks!

I mean, yes, I completely and miserably failed NaNoWriMo, but let’s just forget about that little issue for the moment, shall we? Aha. Hahahaha. Ha.Read More »

The NaNoWriMo Dare Squad: My 2018 NaNoWriMo Dare Squad Dares!

good morning, cyberspace!

For the past two years, I’ve run a little something during the month of November called The NaNoWriMo Dare Squad. For those of you who maybe don’t know what on earth this is, here’s the entire playlist of posts that may enlighten you to the gloriousness that the Dare Squad was. (though I highly recommend checking out the very first Dare Squad post if you’re trying to find information, because that one probably explains it pretty well. [lol, you actually think I’m going to read through it to see if it ACTUALLY explains what the dare squad is? nah, bruh.])

Now, due to an unholy amount of stress that I’ve been slowly working my way through, I will NOT be resurrecting the Dare Squad again this year. (trust me. this saddens me greatly, peasants.) BUT. Since a promise is a promise and I am–quite frankly–tired of not doing the things I say I’ll do, I am here today with MY dare from last year’s Dare Squad!Read More »

Know The Novel: Introduction! — In Which The Bean Writes a Book (NaNoWriMo 2019)

good morning, cyberspace!

Well, folks, it’s that time of year again. The leaves are changing colors. The pumpkins are getting gutted and carved. The apples are being plucked from their leafy boughs. And the writers have started their yearly tradition of hoarding immense amounts of chocolate and screaming to the new blood moon whilst trying to write 50,000 words of a novel in the 30 days of November.

NaNoWriMo season is officially upon us, and I am 100% not prepared.

GOODNIGHT, APRIL!: Feat. The Great Camp NaNoWriMo Recap!

good morning, cyberspace!

You might have noticed there was no post last week.

Aha. Yeah. This was due to many things, but the majority of it was that Easter weekend was a whole lot busier than I had bothered to anticipate for, which left little to no time for writing my Camp NaNoWriMo novel, let alone blogging. So I just . . . didn’t blog.

. . . oops?

But honestly, taking a little break was probably the best thing to have happened to me all month, you guys. The first two weeks of Camp NaNoWriMo were a complete disaster (more on that to come, of course), and I just seriously needed to take some time off and breathe a little bit. And due to my unexpected absence last week, I feel a whole lot more refreshed and ready to take on both the writing and blogging worlds once again.

So let’s talk about what’s been happening this month, shall we? I think there’s quite a bit we need to go over.

The Allotting of The Dares // The NaNoWriMo Dare Squad Wrap-Up Video(s)

good morning, cyberspace!

Well, folks. You know what this is.

A long, long, looooong time ago, I promised you all a video of my face handing out the NaNoWriMo Dare Squad dares to all us losers. And though it took many months and a few outtakes during the Q&A section (don’t get your hopes up, peasants. they have been deleted), I have finally gotten over my fear of talking to literally no one and have created the video.

Or, shall I say, videos, because for some reason I can’t figure out how to merge them. Aha.

But anyway, here you go, my friends. The first video is the Q&A, in which I answer all of the questions you lovely folks sent in to me (I think I forgot to say thank you for sending in questions in the video, so I’m just gonna fling a giant THANK YOU!!!!! at all of your faces right here instead. . . *flings thanks at your face*), and the second video is the actual allotting of the dares, in which the video quality is poor, the editing out of flubbed up words is even poorer, and during which you can see (if you squint hard enough) the fact that I was too lazy to erase my first effort at jotting down some Dare Squadian names on my scrap paper, and so I decided to just cross them out like some sort of weird hitlist instead. #normal

I promise I’m not trying to murder you, guys.

But anyway. Here you go, peasants. Enjoy watching me flail and make a fool of myself! *thumbs up*

(also for anyone who is wondering — no. i am never making another video like this ever again. i am a blogger, not a youtuber, and i think that fact is extremely apparent at this point.)

EDIT NOTE: Apparently WordPress will not allow me to just post the video like a normal person, so I had to upload the videos to YouTube. #FUNTIMES Fortunately for me, I was able to keep them unlisted so that virtually no one will ever be able to find them, so here you guys go! I’ve also got the names and dare numbers listed down below, so even if you don’t want to watch the videos through completely, you can just skippity skip down to the bottom of this page and check out which dare you got!

#regerts

(oh! one other thing. when i say “bad dares” near the beginning of this video, what I’m really trying to say is “super embarrassing dares”. when i’m nervous i just kind of ramble and fail to word properly. so. yeah. fun times.)

The NaNoWriMo Dare Squad Season Two Dare Board

TALK TO ME, PEASANTS

Well. This was properly horrifying. I’m actually not all that comfortable with posting videos of myself onto the internet, but I mean? New year, new experiences, amiright? (this is never happening ever again, oh my word) Hopefully I’ll be able to sleep tonight without having a panic attack. . .

BUT ANYWAY! How about you guys? How have you all been? I’m assuming this post means I’m back from my Hiatus, so let’s talk about all of the glorious things you’ve been doing, shall we? And as for all you NaNoWriMo Dare Squadians out there. . .what do you think of the results for the Dare Squad? I’m actually pretty excited with the one I got (I believe I also failed to mention that mine was submitted by the lovely Eva. . .), and I am EXTREMELY stoked to see what all of my fellow losers do with the dares they’ve received!!! I hope all of you are having the very happiest of New Years, and here’s hoping this video is not the end of my existence here on earth. Aha. *nerves*

As always, until next time. . .

*flings cookies in the air and disappears*

The NaNoWriMo Dare Squad — The Final Post

good morning, cyberspace!

Well, folks, another November has come and gone. We have written. We have cried. We have supported each other. Celebrated with each other. Cursed each other’s cereal so that our friends shall inevitably fail and have to do a dare. Another NaNoWriMo is ending, and with that ending goes the last bits of our sanity that we have been so carefully clinging on to.

NaNoWriMo is finally over, and it is now time, my friends, for us to meet our deaths.

But first, I kind of want to toot my own horn for a moment, here, because something kind of wonderful happened on the 28th, and I just have to share it with you all, apparently. . .Read More »

The NaNoWriMo Dare Squad — The Final Week

good morning, cyberspace!

I caught a cold.

Yep. We’re jumping right into the meat of the post today, folks. Perhaps some of you noticed that there was no post on Saturday. Or Sunday. Perhaps you spent your entire Saturday excessively refreshing your WordPress feed whilst tears of despair dripped down your sad little nose because you couldn’t find a new post written by Yours Truly. or, you know, perhaps you couldn’t care less that there was no post on Saturday because this month’s lineup of blog posts have been nothing short of abysmal and an incoherent mess. aha. oops?

As always, the lateness of this post is, of course, due to multiple reasons. One of which is that I spent the whole of Black Friday writing my book so furiously that I’m pretty sure I burned a hole in my laptop to make up for my Thanksgiving Slip-and-Slide. One of which is that I promised you all a pep talk, and the mere act of promising that has caused me to literally forget how to pep talk.

And the most important reason of all is, most obviously. . .I caught a cold.

And all of these things stock-piled together adds up to one very late, extremely incoherent blog post. Because when one’s throat feels like a giant lump set on fire by the volcanoes of Pompeii, one’s writing style is bound to become most gloriously cramped.

However, last week I promised you all a pep talk, and so a pep talk you shall have.Read More »
